Cinque Torri, Cortina, Italy

June 2000

"I've seen a lot of mountain ranges, and the Dolomites are right up there! Not as massive as the Alaska Range, or tall as the Rockies, or jagged as the Cordillera Blanca, or majestic as the North Cascades, but they have a beauty and mystic all their own! They were magical! The climbing experience was straight out of a classic, black-and-white picture book, except this was in vivid color! "

" A beautiful blue sky, dotted with puffy white clouds, lush green valleys and with dark forests flanking them, a slight breeze but enough sunshine to keep you comfortable if you were moving, fresh air that can only be found in the alpine setting, a classic climbing route up a fantastic crag that seemed to come straight out of a fairy tale, and a panoramic view of mountains so jagged, steep and varied that every glance offered you a different view that caught you spellbound. And off in the distance, the faintest sound of church bells, marking the hour in the town far below. "
